After the Wedding - The First Anniversary

By Bridget Mora

After the wedding, the honeymoon, and the adjustment to being a newlywed, life eventually goes back to normal. That does not have to mean the end of the excitement and romance that you felt while you were engaged. A great time to recreate that feeling is your first anniversary.

All wedding anniversaries are wonderful, but there is something unique about the very first one. There are special traditions associated with a couple's first anniversary, in particular, eating the top tier of the wedding cake. For me, the idea of eating a piece of cake that had been in the freezer for a year wasn't too appealing. What I did was save the top tier to bring out on our first anniversary, then I ordered a tiny replica of our wedding cake from the same bakery. We looked at the old cake, but ate the new one - much tastier that way.

An anniversary is also the perfect time to pull out your wedding jewelry. Wearing your cherished wedding jewelry is romantic at any time of the year, but especially on your first anniversary. A great way to celebrate would be to go to dinner at the same place where you had your first date. Whether the location is fancy or casual, get all done up in a pretty dress worn with you wedding jewelry to make the evening extra special. Then when you get home, take some time to reminisce over your wedding album while you eat the aforementioned cake and sip champagne.

Many brides also like to pull out their bridal gowns around the time of a wedding anniversary. It is a good time to fluff and re-fold it before replacing it into its acid-free box. If the mood strikes you, feel free to wear it around the house for a little while! There are even groups of friends who hold annual parties where all of the women wear their wedding gowns and the men wear tuxedos. It's a really fun and funny tradition to start if you have friends who would be into it. It's even funnier on the years when a member of the group is expecting and has to find a way to squeeze into her dress!

The traditional first anniversary gift is paper and the modern is clocks. Paper is actually quite easy, because it could be something like concert tickets, or something really sentimental like plane tickets for a return trip to your honeymoon destination. Of course, the paper could even be the gift wrap on a present. Another romantic idea would be for a husband to give his wife a bracelet or ring to match the rest of her wedding jewelry.

The first anniversary is an exciting milestone in a couple's relationship. Make a big deal out of it, and show your spouse that you would happily marry him or her all over again!
