At the same time, being a wedding planner can involve a lot of pressure. Things don't always work out the way you plan them and you may have to do a lot of thinking on the feet and often have to put your hands to the work. How do you become a wedding planner? The first thing that you should be doing is to find out a little more about the wedding consultants' associations in you area. Usually they run training courses to prepare you for the job. There is no law requiring that you get a formal training before you start as a wedding consultant but a training program helps in many ways and also should give you a good start. If you decide in favor of a formal training, you may have to spend up to $1,000. To start with, you may have to spend on promoting your business through advertisements. You will also have to spend on setting up an office. The costs for both of these can vary very widely and you will have to decide on them taking into account your budget and the real requirements. Some of the things that you will have to do apart form the above are: Hone your skills: A wedding planner needs to be a good organizer, comfortable dealing with people, and able to think and act quickly. If you feel there's a need to develop any of these skills further, you should first do that. Know about weddings: This one sounds obvious, but not always remembered. There are a lot of things you can do to know more about weddings. Getting a job with an existing consultant might be a good idea to start with. Create a portfolio: Over a period of time, you'll need to build your own portfolio showing photographs of the weddings you've organized and favorable feed back from clients. Build Client relationships: Networking is an important part of any business, and it is particularly important, if you're planning to become a wedding planner. Build relationships with past and prospective clients and see that your reputation spreads by word of mouth. Supplement this with formal advertising. Be professional: Ultimately your value is going to be judged by how professional you are, and how professional you are known to be.
